Parañaque River Clean-up Gets Underway

Parañaque City’s River Rehabilitation Project switched to high gear on Friday following the start of the fourth stage of the clean-up drive on the historic Ilog Palanyag (Parañaque River). The continuing effort is designed to rid the river of garbage; prevent the further despoliation of marine resources; “bring it back to life”; revive traditional industries, saltmaking ang milkfish-raising for livelihood, tourism and cultural pride; make it navigable for possible introduction of public transportation; prevent flooding in the city and neighboring cities; and avert debris spills to Manila Bay, among other reasons. Set on the La Huerta-Sto. Niño–part of the 11-kilometer long river, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) heavy equipment that included a backhoe excavator on a barge; mobile crane; and dump trucks worked non-stop to scoop up debris and silt from the river bottom and transport them to designated dumping grounds. Parañaque Launches Summer Job for Unemployed Workers

Following President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s flagship project on generating employment, boosting eco-tourism and promoting environment protection policies, the City Government of Parañaque, under the leadership of Mayor Florencio M. Bernabe, Jr.  Through the Parañaque Livelihood Resource Management Office (P.L.R.M.O.) and the Department of Labor and Employment (D.O.L.E.) recently launched the “Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (T.U.P.A.D.), a one -month summer job designed to benefit the city’s unemployed and underemployed citizens. The goal of the project is to form a strong workforce hired from the city’s two districts which will be working four hours a day. One group will be assigned to clear debris from eco-tourism areas while the other group will be engaged to clean and paint traffic center islands and gutters of the city’s sidewalks.   “With the hard times brought about by the current economic crisis, we are determined to explore all options to provide our constituents with more opportunities to generate income and at the same time keep the city clean and help protect the environment,” Mayor Bernabe said. Parañaque Launches Environmental Protection Project

To strengthen the city’s efforts towards achieving a garbage-free environment, the Parañaque City Government under the leadership of Mayor Florencio M. Bernabe, Jr.  Will launch an environmental protection project called Project Population, Health and Environment on April 22, 2009. Spearheading the project will be the City Health Office headed by Dra. Olga Virtusio, the Solid Waste and Environmental Sanitation Office under Mr. Willy De Ocampo, the City Engineering Office headed by Engr. Raydivino Daval Santos and the Tricycle Regulatory Office under Mr. Restituto Pagsisihan in partnership with the Save The Parañaque River Foundation and other NGOs in cleaning of garbage in the city.  Dra. Virtusio explained the importance that the environment has on the health and economic conditions of constituents, saying that a garbage free environment not only safeguards the health of residents but encourages economic growth as well. “How we manage our environment determines the state of our constituents’ health and economic status which is why we are committed to implementing projects such as this.
